Aiming to create a tranquil yet conveniently located place of rest for the elderly, Nursing Care House of Grace non-profit company (NPO) has opened its doors. The new elderly care facility located on the corner of Albert Street and Batoka Avenue held a launch day on Saturday July 2, featuring boerewors rolls, refreshments and a jumping castle for the younger members of the family.

Johanna Bothma and her nephew Corné Pauley purchased the sun-filled house. Johanna has 31 years of nursing experience under her scrubs while Corné has been in the medical field for five years and also has some experience as a hairstylist. Johanna has also served as a pastor at 153 Ministries in Randfontein, meaning the facility will be run with a strong Christian ethos.

Currently with four staff, including Johanna and Corné, the facility can house roughly 30 residents but current only has two full-time occupants. The staff complement will increase as the facility grows, with the immediate goal being to create a hive of healing and recovery. Nursing Care House of Grace offers long-term permanent residency, short-term respite care as well as frail care, daycare and weekend stay care for elderly patients.

The inspiration for opening the facility comes from Johanna’s passion for helping as well as understanding that a gap exists for more flexible and affordable care options. “We identified a need to provide more beds to alleviate the strain on waiting lists,” said Johanna, who has moved into the facility herself to be able to provide 24-hour hands-on assistance for the residents.
Anyone moving into the home will be encouraged to bring as many personal items with them to promote an easier adjustment. The house has several play areas to encourage family visits with grandchildren. Striving to be more than a care facility, Johanna said, “We want to offer them a home away from home”.
