Lighting a spark for Mandela Day

If you like knitting and helping those in need, you can also be a part of this exciting challenge.

Knitting can be fun, creative and even therapeutic. But have you ever thought that two needles and some wool can also mean the world to those in need of some warmth this winter?

In the true spirit of Mandela Day, Light A Sparke NPO asked all of their supporters to knit one or 67 winter woollies using only colours of the South African flag. According to NGO founder, Janene Machin this is the first time they’ve done something special for Mandela Day.

“Our donors have been very creative in getting this right – after all it’s supposed to be a fun challenge. It really has received good feedback so far, so we will now continue this challenge annually,” Janene said.

They aim to reach 670 items by Monday, July 18, which is the deadline for this challenge. Thus far they’ve gathered an impressive 325 items. At Light A Sparke they try to ensure that what is made or donated by the community is distributed in that same community, wherever the need may be.

“We hope to distribute whatever we have collected on Mandela Day. We believe in paying it forward and in random acts of kindness. Our aim is to Light A Sparke and make a fire grow like something contagious,” Janene said.

“One person gets involved and involves another person. We can make a difference one spark at a time. Over the past year we have grown in leaps and bounds. Thanks to our donors we have started to make a dent and help many in need, especially during the cold winter.”

Anyone who would like to donate, find out more or get involved is welcome to contact Janene on 083 212 5276.
