Baby Moses baking a difference
Even though it's not possible for one person to change the world, it is possible to change the world for one person.
The aroma of freshly baked cookies filled the Baby Moses kitchen recently while several pairs of young hands worked together to make this Mandela Day a memorable one.
Since Baby Moses – a sanctuary and place of safety for abused, abandoned and neglected babies, toddlers and teens – has always been on the receiving end come July 18, they decided to pay it forward this time around.
According to co-founder, Lanie de Klerk, they decided to make some scrumptious cookies and sandwiches for around 70 children who are beneficiaries of the Kagiso Feeding Scheme which is supported by the sanctuary regularly.

“These underprivileged little ones live on the outskirts of Kagiso and while many of them receive meals from their schools in the week, many of them go hungry on weekends and during school holidays. And that’s when we want to help and fill their tummies,” she said.
“We know what it’s like to suffer, and that’s why we want to help those suffering. We’ve received so much love and compassion from others. This Madiba Day we want to pass a little bit of that ‘sunshine’ on to someone else.”
But, the kindness didn’t stop there. Prior to putting on the oven mitts, Lanie and a few of the children kicked off Mandela Day by cleaning up a large piece of veldt that runs adjacent to a section of Ruhamah Drive near the sanctuary.

They also baked some divine cupcakes which they handed out to nearby commuters and car guards during the afternoon.
“We wanted to make someone’s day just a little bit better. We also wanted to show others that despite the circumstances you might find yourself in, you can still help others and make a difference. Like Madiba said, ‘There can be no greater gift than that of giving one’s time and energy to help others without expecting anything in return’,” she said.
