Students and facilitators of their IIE MSA Cares initiative handed over dignity packs at the Honeydew Community Policing Forum (CPF) Victim Support Centre (VSC), July 27. Part of IIE MSA Cares’ Mandela Day activation, students donated throughout late June and July, and the morning donation drop was the culmination of the months’ efforts.

The Honeydew CPF VSC is a voluntary service that works closely with police in the Honeydew policing precinct. They assist members of the public who are victims of contact crimes such as robberies, domestic violence, assaults and rape, to name a few. The VSC members visit crime scenes where they offer support to women, children and men who have endured a traumatic experience.
IIE MSA Cares has been running for two years but this is the first project dedicated to the support structures at the Honeydew police station. Head of Student Services, Dash Reddy, who is tied to the station through his membership of the Honeydew CPF, stated that this was the first of many collaborations.
“Knowing what Hanlee and Jon do with the CPF together with police, we felt we could reach out and support in that sense,” said Reddy.
Hanlee Fourie, who runs the VSC with limited resources, extended her gratitude to IIE MSA for their valuable contribution. The dignity packs donated contain a pair of ladies underwear, a bar of soap and a face cloth. Hanlee and the VSC members also add toothbrushes, toothpaste, sanitary products and a scarf to victim care packs when available. Every donation and every bit of assistance go a little way to helping someone through a moment of trauma.
