Charles Goodyear, inventor of vulcanised rubber was born today

Take care of your tyres with these safety tips.

Today is the day that a man whose name has graced almost every road worldwide was born. Connecticut manufacturing engineer, Charles Goodyear, was born in New Haven on December 29 1800 and is the man who invented the vulcanisation process for rubber which he patented in 1844.

Goodyear would, however, have no hand in creating the tyre manufacturer that carries his name, as that was founded in 1898, 38 years after his death. The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company was founded in Ohio and in their 124 history have become one the premier names in automotive history. As you travel this holiday season, remember Goodyear with a few tips on proper tyre safety.

– Shallow tread grooves make it harder to control the vehicle in wet weather.
– Check the pressure regularly.
– Check for damage and unusual wear and tear.
– Make sure there is enough tread.
– Do not overload your car.
– Regularly check your wheels alignment.
– Be mindful when mounting the kerb.
– Maintain good driving habits.
– Poor suspension will create irregular tyre wear.
