Clearwater Mall helps raise R2.1m for childhood cancer

Over 80 malls across South Africa raised over R2.1 million on National Cupcake Day for Cupcakes of Hope, funding support for 140 children battling cancer.

Clearwater Mall in Strubens Valley was among more than 80 shopping centres across South Africa that participated in National Cupcake Day on Satyrdat, September26, raising funds to support children and families affected by childhood cancer.

The nationwide campaign, hosted by Cupcakes of Hope, raised R2.1m, directly assisting 140 young cancer patients and their families.

According to Clearwater Mall event coordinator Melissa Quinn, 2 500 donated cupcakes were sold over two days. Although exact national sales figures were not disclosed, Quinn confirmed the campaign successfully reached its fundraising target thanks to the dedication of bakers, volunteers, and the community.

“I am extremely grateful to each baker who donated cupcakes and toppers, and to every one of our volunteers,” said Quinn. “To the ladies, gents, and students who volunteer on the day, I couldn’t do this without you.”

Quinn shared that a particularly poignant moment occurred when a winner of a donated prize cake mentioned that her own daughter had been supported by Cupcakes of Hope several years earlier. “Hearing her story was a really sad and humbling experience,” Quinn added.

In addition to volunteers and bakers, Quinn expressed gratitude to Clearwater Mall for hosting the event and to members of the public who purchased cupcakes in support of the cause.

Although National Cupcake Day has concluded, the public can continue supporting Cupcakes of Hope throughout the year by purchasing merchandise, hosting a ‘Party of Hope’ at schools or workplaces, or inviting the organisation to sell cupcakes at weekend community events.

Quinn confirmed she will coordinate the Clearwater Mall fundraiser again for National Cupcake Day 2027, aiming to raise more funds, increase childhood cancer awareness, and encourage broader community involvement.
