The learners and staff of DLN Private School embarked on a project to bring much-needed warmth. After a week of preparations, roughly 30 budding Grade 4 to 9 seamstresses and designers began weaving together 190 squares into a blanket on Friday, February 10.

The sewing project is a combination of skills development interwoven with a lesson on the importance of helping others. Made of off-cuts donated by a friend of the school, the quilt bound by charity will be going to an elderly woman in Zandspruit.

As training for the big day, learners began with a practice cloth that outlined the basic forms of sewing and stitching. First, they mastered threading a two-holed button, progressing through larger buttons before trying their hand at straight stitches, and cross stitches. Finally, the learners mended a tear in the cloth to demonstrate their ability to sew two pieces together.

The result was a colourful array of squares and the collective satisfaction of a job well down. DLN takes on one charity project a year to impart life skills to the learners at the same time.

DLN Principal, Leonie Leppich explained, saying, “We feel everyone should know how to stitch and sew. It is a basic skill that allows for creativity and functionality. They get to learn this all while helping a lady stay warm.”
