Local hero prevents traffic jam

A security guard at West Rand Eye Centre saved the day when a tree branch fell into the road, preventing motorists from passing on their way home.

On February 14, Moses Maphiri witnessed a delivery truck break off a low-hanging tree branch when driving past on Beverly Drive North.

He quickly made work of the large section of the tree that was in the way of motorists trying to reach the Christiaan de Wet traffic intersection from Beverly Drive North, on their way home.

Maphiri started by removing the smaller branches, after which he tackled the bigger branch that was still attached to the tree with the use of a small axe he found nearby.

He spent 20 minutes chopping through the wood, with the axe’s blade splintering into smaller pieces. Maphiri successfully removed the broken tree branch onto the pavement and out of the way of oncoming traffic.

Dr Katie Rafferty of West Rand Eye Centre said, “I was super impressed with Moses’s diligence and ingenuity, as well as his willingness to stay on after working hours to do the right thing.”
