Florida CPF elections back on track
Florida CPF has announced that their elections for a new CPF Sector 2 executive are finally on track.
Florida Community Police Forum (CPF) chairperson Farhaad Sardiwalla announced at the latest CPF stakeholder meeting that arrangements for elections for a new Sector 2 CPF committee were largely finalised, with dates and venues confirmed for most areas.
Attempts at holding elections were halted last year when chaos broke out at both election meetings and amid widespread allegations of attempted election rigging.
According to Sardiwalla, this forced the CPF executive to come up with a plan that both satisfies the respective stakeholders and complies with the CPF constitution.
“Working in collaboration with the Department of Community Safety and the Provincial CPF, we conceived a plan of action which we view as being fair to all the different stakeholders and communities in Florida,” he says.
“We are confident that this time around the election will go off without any unnecessary complications, and will be concluded amicably.”
Community representative election dates are scheduled as follows:
• Discovery community: Thursday, April 3, at 19:00 at St Lawrence Anglican Church, Anstruther Street, Discovery
• Hamberg/ Florida Lake community: Thursday, April 10 at 19:00 at Florida Lake Dragon Boat Club
• Jerusalema community: Thursday, April 17 at 19:00 at the community hall in Jerusalema informal settlement
“We are holding elections per area to simplify the process and make it more manageable. The aim is also to ensure that all the different communities within the Florida Policing Precinct have representation on the executive,” says Sardiwalla.
“We will announce election dates for the remaining neighbourhoods shortly.”
He adds that in each area, people may be nominated. These nominations will be vetted according to CPF procedure, and on election day, one person will be voted in by the community.
Only residents of that specific area may vote in the election.
The elected persons for the various areas will make up the Sector Two CPF executive, who will then vote among themselves to determine who will be appointed to the various executive positions.
“More details regarding the elections will be communicated in due time,” he concludes.
