Local couple’s union a testament of unconditional love

Sixty-four years of loving and supporting each other through thick and thin.

In a world where love stories often fade with time, Rita (81) and Seun (86) Broodryk have defied the odds, celebrating an astonishing 64 years of marriage on March 25.

Seun, originally from Klerksdorp, came to Johannesburg in 1957 and one day attended his cousin’s party, not knowing that he would meet the love of his life.

“We were both teenagers when we met, and it was love at first sight. I was immediately mesmerised by Rita’s charm and beauty,” Seun said.

“To make sure I get her, I got close to her dad, who was a mechanic, and I would often help him fix cars. I asked her out for quite a long time, and she would always run away or hide every time she saw me. Her family approved our relationship, and we started going out on dates.”

After six years of blossoming romance, the couple exchanged vows in 1961 at the tender ages of 18 and 22, and they had their firstborn child in 1962.

The 64 years of love, understanding and acceptance have been built on a commitment to maintaining their Christian values and honouring their vows to always be there for each other, through thick and thin.

Described as ‘fantastic parents’ who always prioritised time spent with family, those characteristics and morals still permeate their children’s lives today.

“We communicate, make sure we don’t go to bed angry at each other, and have God on our side,” Rita shared, highlighting the core values that have sustained their marriage.

What’s remarkable about this couple is that they still love each other like they just met. Seun shared that what he loves about Rita is her positivity, neatness, sense of style, and calm demeanor. Their love for each other is palpable, and their relationship continues to inspire their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

As they celebrate this milestone, Seun and Rita offer words of wisdom to young couples.

“Love, trust and spend your life with each other.”
