Tips on how to stay happily married

Wedding anniversaries are almost a rare commodity these days and should always be celebrated.

My husband and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary recently. I realise that 25 years might seem trivial if you think that there are couples who have been married for 30, 40, 50 or even 60 years, but I do believe that it is quite a milestone if you measure it against current standards.

Marriages these days do not always last that long, because couples do not always realise that you have to work hard to stay together. It is a common thing to rather replace something that is not working anymore instead of fixing it and I think this is one of the main reasons why getting married (and staying married) is almost a commodity.

People like to ask married couples what their advice is for a long and happy marriage and I decided to browse the internet a bit, and would love to share some of these gems from celebrities with you:

• “Before you marry a person you should first make them use a computer with slow internet to see who they really are.” – Will Ferrell
• “Husband secretly lowers the thermostat and I secretly turn it back up. We both vehemently deny touching it. Marriage is fun.” – Stephanie Ortiz
• “A man’s main job is to protect his woman from her desire to ‘get bangs’ every other month.” – Dax Shepard
• “I married for love, but the obvious side benefit of having someone around to find my glasses cannot be ignored.” – Cameron Esposito
• “Remember that creating a successful marriage is like farming: You have to start over again every morning.” – H Jackson Brown, Jr.
• “I love being married. It’s so great to find that one special person you want to annoy for the rest of your life.” – Rita Rudner.
• “You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.” – Dr Seuss.
• “A happy marriage is the union of two good forgivers.” – Ruth Bell Graham.
• “Marriage has no guarantees. If that’s what you’re looking for, go live with a car battery.” – Erma Bombeck.
• “Marriage is not just spiritual communion, it is also remembering to take out the trash.” – Joyce Brothers.
