WATCH: Joburg Zoo team talks about the importance of biodiversity and the ecosystem
Davidsonville children and residents learn more about biodiversity and ecosystems.
The Johannesburg Zoo visited the Davidsonville Library on April 3 to showcase the animals they have at the zoo. The team allowed the children and residents in attendance to touch and feel some of the animals.

The skin of a lion, python and crocodile, together with an elephant foot, a stuffed red panda and a hyena formed part of the demonstrations. The participants had the opportunity to touch the different skins as well as a live constrictor snake.

“We were so excited,” said participant Norma Mapson. “We could touch different snake skins and learn more about them, It’s something nice to keep the kids busy for the holidays.”
The senior environmental specialist at the zoo, Nathi Mvula, said children need to understand and learn about ecosystems, biodiversity and how to take care of animals and love them.

“This encourages the children to read and use library resources in a way that will benefit their future,” librarian Beaula Jones said.
The programme emphasised the unique features and adaptations of different animal species. Participants now know more about managing and caring for animals and have practical experience.
