Threads Up initiative brings dignity to community
Horizon Shopping Centre with Siyabonga Dorah's Ark supported the homeless and less fortunate through a unique shopping experience.
Homeless and less fortunate members of the community had a unique experience on Saturday, May 3.
They had the opportunity to walk through a makeshift store and pick out any clothes for themselves.

The Threads Up initiative, presented by Horizon Shopping Centre and Siyabonga Dorah’s Ark, a local non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting vulnerable groups, allowed vulnerable community members facing hardship to shop for clothing, shoes, toiletries, books, and toys, giving them a chance to experience the dignity of shopping for the essentials that are often taken for granted.

The day was more than that; there was also a salon for haircare and a face-painting session for kids, which brought smiles to many faces. Food was also served, making the day an extra special experience.

According to Unathi Tyali, marketing manager of the shopping centre, the initiative hoped to provide a dignified shopping experience.

“We wanted to remind them that they are valued and cared for,” she said.
She noted that each shopper also got a personal shopper to walk through the store with them and pick out what they wanted.

“With over R300 000 received in donations and 180 people assisted in 2024, this campaign has already demonstrated its success, resulting in many donors requesting when the next event will be, and has inspired Horizon Shopping Centre to make this a signature event for the centre and the community.”
She gave thanks to the sponsors and donors who made the day possible, “Thank you to Nando’s Clicks Perfect Water, Jam Clothing, Wally’s Barber, Ackermans, Ons Winkel and Mr Price Home.”
