JMPD officers on patrol along the N1 South managed to successfully rescue a kidnapping victim in the early hours of June 18 after a high-speed chase.
According to JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla, the officers were driving along the N1 South approaching 14th Avenue at 04:00 when they noticed a silver-grey Hyundai moving without its headlights on.
“As the officers pulled alongside the vehicle to alert the driver, a woman inside the Hyundai screamed for help through an open window, stating she was being kidnapped,” says Fihla.
“The officers activated their blue lights and sirens to get the driver to pull over, but he opted to accelerate, leading to a high-speed pursuit.
“The suspect exited the highway at Gordon Road with the JMPD on his tail. They managed to force the vehicle to a halt on 6th Street in Delarey.
“The suspect jumped out of the vehicle, abandoning the car and his hostage, and fled on foot.
“Back-up was called, and the officers rescued the woman, who confirmed she had been kidnapped by her ex-boyfriend from her workplace in Midrand, where she was working the night shift.
“A case of kidnapping was opened at the Florida Police Station, and the vehicle was seized for further investigation.”
JMPD’s Chief of Police Commissioner Patrick Jaca stated, “I commend the exceptional bravery and swift action of our officers, which led to the rescue of the victim.
“Their vigilance and decisive response directly led to the safe rescue of a vulnerable citizen.
“This incident underscores the JMPD’s unwavering commitment to combating crime and ensuring the safety of all residents in Johannesburg.”
Jaca added that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
