As part of an effort by City Power to support vulnerable households, qualifying indigent households or individuals in Johannesburg can receive 50kWh of free basic electricity (FBE) every month.
According to the parastatal, this will also reduce illegal connections and assist households or individuals who are at risk.

To qualify, the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) requires households or individuals to meet their indigent policy criteria, which include not having an income of more than R7 503.01 per month, being unemployed, or receiving social assistance. They also require documents such as proof of residency, a valid ID, a CoJ rates and taxes account, and evidence of income such as an affidavit or SASSA card. You can register at any of their door-to-door campaigns, imbizos, at City Power Service Delivery Centres (SDCs), taxi ranks, churches, malls, and community pop-up stations until July 31.
What are the benefits of FBE:
• 50kWh of free power each month
• exemption from R200 monthly surcharge
• potential access to other rebates (water, property rates, refuse)
If your meter has been tampered with, it will be changed at no extra cost and without penalties for the time being. If a household or individual can pay but chooses not to, City Power will disconnect and remove their meters. Additionally, they can be fined a R14 000 penalty.
Your smart meter will be instantly credited after you have registered and been approved.
