Learners gifted with reading glasses
The University of Johannesburg's Optometry Department delivered 62 pairs of reading glasses to Discovery Primary School learners.
Following an eye test conducted at Discovery Primary School in April by third-year optometry students from the University of Johannesburg (UJ), 62 pairs of reading glasses were delivered to the learners who were identified as needing them.
The glasses were delivered on Wednesday, June 11, and are tailored to each learner’s specific needs.

During the eye tests, the students conducted comprehensive assessments, including colour co-ordination, visual acuity tests, eye alignment checks, and visual processing evaluations.

According to Kim Paul head of School Base Support and teacher at Discovery Primary the school is deeply grateful for the donation as it will support the learners’ vision and well-being.
“This will make a huge difference in our learners’ academics, especially for those who couldn’t afford glasses otherwise,” she said.
Siphephiso Mhlophe optometry manager at UJ said the eye tests conducted in primary schools are part of the university’s programme of giving back to the community as they celebrate 20 years of impact in academic excellence.

“The glasses will enable the learners to see clearly and comfortably, enhancing their reading abilities and overall academic performance,” he added.
The learners left with smiles on their faces after receiving their glasses, clearly (excuse the pun) thrilled with their new gift of clearer vision.
