JMPD’s urgent safety advisory for New Year travellers

As holiday traffic peaks, JMPD urges families to prioritise safety when travelling back home.

As the New Year celebrations come to a close, many families will be packing up and heading home after a well-deserved holiday.

While the festive season is a time for joy and relaxation, it is crucial to keep safety top of mind, especially when getting back on the road.

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla urges all motorists to take extra precautions during this busy travel period with these tips:

1. The pre-trip check-up – Inspect your vehicle
Before you load the car or start the engine, take a few minutes to check the essentials. Make sure your tyres are properly inflated and that the tread depth is safe. Test all lights, headlights, brake lights, and indicators to ensure they’re working. Don’t forget to check your wiper blades and top up all fluid levels, including oil, coolant, and windshield washer fluid.

2. Plan your route (and timing)
Use a reliable navigation app to look out for real-time traffic updates, construction zones, or accident hotspots. Try to avoid travelling on peak days like January 1 or 2 if possible, and opt for early morning or off-peak hours to beat the congestion.

3. Staying safe on the road – Prioritise rest
Driving while tired is just as dangerous as driving under the influence. Get a full night’s rest before hitting the road, and if your trip is long, schedule a break every two hours or 200km. Stretching your legs and taking a breather can do wonders for your concentration.

4. Maintain a safe following distance
With heavy traffic and unpredictable drivers, keeping a safe distance from the vehicle ahead is essential. This cushion gives you more time to react to sudden stops or road hazards.

5. Put away distractions
Set your music and GPS before you begin your journey. Keep your phone on silent or in do-not-disturb mode while driving. Texting or calling behind the wheel isn’t worth the risk, and your focus should be on the road ahead.

6. Be patient and respectful
Everyone is trying to get home safely. Avoid aggressive driving, speeding, or weaving through traffic. Stay calm, be courteous to other road users, and remember: Arriving a few minutes late is better than not arriving at all.

7. Adhere to speed limits
Speeding remains one of the leading causes of road accidents. Stick to the posted speed limits – they’re there to protect you. Slower speeds mean more control and less chance of a serious crash if something goes wrong.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility. Let’s all do our part to make sure our families and everyone else on the road arrive home safely this New Year.

“From the entire team at JMPD, we wish you safe travels and a prosperous year ahead,” Fihla says.
