Teacher attacked at Die Burger

The violent attack on a teacher at Hoërskool Die Burger has sent shockwaves through the community.

Residents are fuming following news that a teacher at Hoërskool Die Burger was attacked in class by a Grade 12 learner.

The school is notorious within the community for the many problems it faces, including alleged gang activity among the learners, drug dealing and drug abuse, violence and intimidation of learners by gang-affiliated learners, and criminal acts outside of school by some learners, among others.

According to Florida police detective commander Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Seageng, the incident occurred during a Secondary School Improvement Programme (SSIP) class held at the school on March 8.

Seageng says a case of assault was opened against the learner. He adds that the learner was not arrested but that a warning statement was served.

The Roodepoort Record reached out to Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona, who confirmed the department is aware of the incident.

“The learner was immediately suspended pending necessary disciplinary processes, and the outcome thereof will be communicated to all affected parties,” says Mabona.

He adds that the department’s psycho-social support team was dispatched to the school to provide the necessary support, and a team of district officials have been allocated to assist the school.

“Indeed, our schools are a microcosm of society, and what generally occurs in our society finds expression in our schools.

“We experience societal ills occurring within our school environment, which is evident in learner ill-discipline, learner-to-learner violence, learner-to-educator violence, bullying, gangsterism, drugs and substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, and underage sex.

“We strongly condemn any acts of misconduct which seek to undermine the dignity of our learning institutions.

“Schools are urged to enforce their codes of conduct to deal with disciplinary matters. The department continues to appeal to parents in assisting to assist in enforcing discipline in and outside the school environment.”

Repeated attempts to contact the principal of Hoërskool Die Burger have thus far been unsuccessful.
