Family seeks justice after fatal hit-and-run of Norman Sibanda

The fight for justice continues, but will it help a grieving family find peace?

The Roodepoort Northsider accompanied the brother of slain hit-and-run victim Norman Sibanda to the Honeydew Police Station on July 31 in their ongoing search for justice.

Sibanda’s life was tragically cut short in the incident near his residence on June 27. Over a month later, police have yet to provide any substantial update, while friends and family are still struggling to come to terms with his death.

During the visit to the police station, intern journalist Itumeleng Molefe requested to speak with the investigating officer, Sergeant Molupe, who was unavailable. The Northsider was advised to follow up telephonically. However, Molupe declined to speak with Molefe, stating that proper channels must be followed to obtain further information on the case.

In a previous article published on July 7, the Northsider had also attempted to obtain comment from provincial police spokesperson Colonel Nevhuhulwi but was unsuccessful.

The Northsider has since reached out to another provincial spokesperson, Colonel Mavela Masondo, and his response will be published once received.

Norman’s brother, Dumisani Sibanda, expressed his frustration, explaining that the family wishes to repatriate Norman’s body to Zimbabwe for burial.

“We need to take Norman’s body home; it’s our culture to do so,” he said.

He also outlined the financial challenges they are facing.

“We are trying to raise enough money, and we are willing to do whatever it takes for him to get a dignified funeral at home.”

Dumisani expressed gratitude to the Zimbabwean community in South Africa for their support.

“It means a lot to our family, and this shows Ubuntu within the Zimbabwean community. As a family, we thank God for that, and we hope everything will be fine,” he said.
