Police arrest 59 people during Operation Shanela in Honeydew
Behind the flashing lights was a well-planned operation that no one saw coming.
On Saturday, August 2, residents in and around the Honeydew precinct were caught off guard as the Gauteng Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, led the Provincial Operation Shanela in the area.
The various law enforcement agencies, including the police, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), the Department of Home Affairs, the Gauteng Traffic Police, and the Honeydew CPF, came together for the success of the operation.
According to the Honeydew CPF public relations officer, Michael Steyn, the operation aimed to crack down on crime through coordinated action.
“The operation was effective, thanks to the joint efforts of law enforcement and community structures. Everyone worked together toward the shared goal of making Honeydew safer,” he said.

During the operation, law enforcement officers conducted thorough searches and made several arrests, and 675 individuals and 330 vehicles were searched, resulting in the arrest of 21 undocumented people. Additionally, eight suspects were arrested for selling liquor without a licence, and another eight were apprehended for possession of dagga or drugs. One person was arrested for the possession of counterfeit goods, and 21 people were taken into custody for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Several illegal liquor outlets were targeted and closed during the operation. A number of drivers who failed to comply with road regulations were issued with traffic fines. Steyn praised the dedication of local CPF volunteers, passing his gratitude.
“A massive thank you to our Honeydew CPF patrollers who came out to assist. Their dedication and presence on the ground made a real difference.”
The success of the operation shows the importance of the collaboration between government departments, community safety partners, and local police. Steyn praised the dedication and willingness to fight crime in the area shown by the people in their respective roles and departments during the operation.
“We’re grateful for the commitment shown by all agencies involved. Together, we continue working toward a safer Honeydew for all residents.”
The operation forms part of an ongoing provincial crime-fighting campaign that law enforcement agencies have put into place to make communities safer for all residents.
