The Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson, Steve Mabona, confirmed that 19 learners from Hoërskool Roodepoort and West Ridge High School were suspended after a violent clash between these two schools last week.
According to reports, the violence stemmed from an earlier altercation between learners of the two schools, which occurred on August 15, and later went viral on social media.
The situation escalated on Monday, August 18, when a group of West Ridge learners, allegedly seeking revenge, went to Hoërskool Roodepoort, where they attacked learners and pelted cars with stones.

According to Mabona, department officials engaged the two schools today, August 20.
“Only six parents still need to visit the schools to finalise when the disciplinary process for their children will take place. The other parents were engaged accordingly,” said Mabona.
He said the department will closely monitor the disciplinary processes.
Additionally, two out of the three seriously injured learners are still receiving medical care, and one has been discharged.
“We want to call on parents to instil discipline in their children because we don’t want to see violence perpetrated in or around the two schools or any other schools in the province.
“We have observed both schools, and curriculum delivery is continuing as normal,” he concluded.
