Honeydew CPF warns residents against viral ‘SABC Inspector’ scam

Honeydew CPF urges residents to stop spreading false information.

The Honeydew Community Police Forum (CPF) has issued a public warning urging residents to ignore and stop sharing a viral message circulating on social media and WhatsApp groups that falsely claims armed robbers are posing as SABC inspectors.

According to the CPF public relations officer, Michael Steyn, the message alleges that three well-dressed men wearing suits and driving a silver VW Caddy, bearing registration number HH 54 LP GP, are visiting homes under the guise of checking television licences and the number of TVs in households before committing armed robberies.

“This is a long-running hoax that has been circulating since at least 2018 and resurfaces periodically to create fear and panic within communities,” he said.

Steyn further clarified that the SABC does not conduct unannounced door-to-door inspections or raids. Any official engagement by the broadcaster would be preceded by formal communication and supported by proper identification.

Community members have been urged to refrain from forwarding the message, as the spread of unverified information can cause unnecessary anxiety and distract from real safety concerns.

“The registration mentioned forms part of this long-running chain message and is not linked to any verified incidents in our area,” Steyn added.

While dismissing the hoax, the CPF reminded residents to remain vigilant and follow basic safety precautions:

• Verify information before sharing and rely only on alerts from police, the CPF, or recognised security providers
• Do not open gates or doors to anyone claiming to be an official without verifying their credentials from behind a locked gate or security barrier
• Avoid confronting suspicious individuals or vehicles and instead contact police or a private armed response service immediately

Steyn encourages residents to stay informed, remain alert, and play a responsible role in preventing the spread of fake news within the community.
