Sentencing of child abuser postponed again

Family expresses frustration as delays continue in the sentencing of Fernanado Cupido.

The much-anticipated sentencing of convicted child abuser Fernanado Cupido has once again been postponed at the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on March 17.

The postponement is due to a report from Correctional Services not being ready, despite the case having been delayed for the same reason during his previous court appearance.

Family members of the young victim – who suffered a severe beating at the hands of Cupido outside a residential complex in Swan Street, Florida, more than a year ago – expressed their dismay at the continued delays.

“We’ve been attending every court appearance over the past year in the hope that we, as a family, can eventually see justice done.

“We’ve had to frequently take leave from work to be at court, only to face endless postponements of the case,” they said.

Cupido was arrested for the brutal attack on the then two-year-old boy following an extensive search after he fled. Video footage of him repeatedly hitting and kicking the child had circulated widely on social media.

He was eventually tracked down to a premises in Randfontein, where he had been hiding.

Cupido is now expected to return to court on April 20 for pre-sentencing proceedings.
