Gate motor theft suspect nabbed in joint operation

The suspect is believed to be linked to a string of gate motor theft incidents across the western suburbs.

Honeydew CPF, in collaboration with the police and other security entities, arrested a man for stealing a gate motor on April 21.

According to the CPF’s public relations officer, Michael Steyn, the members who deployed to the identified area successfully located the thief in a vehicle that had been flagged in multiple gate motor theft cases in Fairlands and Florida. A swift tactical intervention led to the apprehension of the driver without incident.

“The vehicle had previously been flagged in an attempted theft in Radiokop as well shortly before the driver was arrested,” said Steyn.

Investigators believe the suspect was acting as the driver for a group involved in the thefts. Reports indicate he had dropped off accomplices at a location where they attempted to steal a gate motor, temporarily separating from them, a move that ultimately created an opportunity for law enforcement to intercept him.

The arrest was carried out through a joint effort involving Honeydew police, the West Rand Flying Squad, private security companies, and vehicle tracking specialists. Authorities had circulated a lookout alert after receiving intelligence about the suspect vehicle’s movements, prompting an immediate and targeted response.

Following the arrest, the suspect and the vehicle were taken to Honeydew Police Station for further investigation and processing. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether additional arrests are imminent, but indicated that investigations are ongoing.

Steyn commended the operation as an example of effective collaboration between public law enforcement and private security partners. Officials say such coordinated efforts are essential in addressing the growing challenge of property-related crimes in the region.

Steyn urged community members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity as investigations continue.
