CBD drug dealer nabbed

JMPD officers approached the suspect after he was seen making exchanges with various people at Roodepoort Train Station.

A drug dealer was arrested, and nearly 150 packets of nayope confiscated at Roodepoort Train Station on April 26.

Nayope, also known as Whoonga, is typically made using a m ix of low-grade heroin, dagga, and various added ingredients like rat poison or detergents. It is highly addictive and extremely dangerous.

According to JMPD spokesperson, Superintendent Xolani Fihla, vigilant officers from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department Tactical Response Unit (TRU) successfully apprehended the man for dealing in drugs and attempting to bribe officers in the Roodepoort CBD.

“While conducting routine crime prevention patrols, officers observed suspicious activity at the Roodepoort Train Station,” he says.

“Upon closer inspection, they identified a male individual making multiple exchanges with various people in the area, and decided, based on their observation, to intercept the suspect.

“A preliminary search at the scene revealed 47 folded brown plastic packets containing suspected nyaope.

“Following further questioning, the suspect led officers to his residence where a secondary search of the premises recovered an additional 100 packets of the same substance.

“In total, 147 folded packets of suspected nyaope with an estimated street value of approximately R4 410 were recovered and seized.”

Fihla says that during the arrest, the suspect attempted to bribe the officers in an effort to evade arrest.

“The bribe offer was rejected outright, and an additional charge of bribery was added to his docket.

“The suspect was processed and detained at Roodepoort police station, where he faces charges of dealing in illegal substances and attempting to bribe officers.”

Fihla says this arrest sends a clear message to those involved in peddling narcotics within communities.

“Our officers remain committed to the #SaferJoburg initiative and will continue to operate with integrity, despite any attempts at corruption.

“The JMPD remains dedicated to restoring and maintaining the rule of law across the City of Johannesburg.”
