2 arrested in Roodepoort for shooting incident

Two suspects are expected to appear in court today over the fatal shooting of a TVET student in Bloemfontein.

Two suspects aged 37 and 41, are expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court today on different charges related to the same case, which involves the shooting of 29-year-old TVET student Lerato Nkaki.

The two were arrested in Roodepoort after fleeing a crime scene in Bloemfontein.

According to a police report, a woman and her boyfriend was with another couple at a well-known guest house in Bothshabelo in Bloemfontein for an ‘after tears’ party on May 18 following a funeral they attended when the boyfriend produced a firearm and shot her.

After cleaning the blood from the crime scene, the woman was taken to Botshabelo hospital by the suspects, from where she was later transferred to Pelonomi Hospital.

The suspects apparently convinced her to discharge herself from hospital and gave her money for pain medication, telling her the gunshot wound would heal on its own.

On May 31, the victim succumbed to said gunshot wound sustained to her leg.

Police traced the suspects to Roodepoort and arrested them on Thursday.

The 37-year-old suspect will face charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice, while the 41-year-old suspect is charged with defeating the ends of justice only.
