Honeydew and Cosmo City blitz yields 45 arrests
A joint law enforcement operation targets crime hotspots, yielding dozens of arrests during targeted roadblocks, liquor inspections, and detective tracing.
Police arrested 45 suspects during a multidisciplinary Operation Shanela II in Honeydew and Cosmo City on September 23.
The operation included a roadblock, inspections at liquor outlets and pre-operation activities by detectives, crime intelligence and visible policing officers, according to Johannesburg District Corporate Communication spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mpho Tshetlhane.
During the roadblock, law enforcement officers searched 1 023 people and 541 vehicles, arresting 11 suspects for driving under the influence of liquor and issuing nine traffic fines for non-compliance with traffic laws.
Liquor outlet inspections resulted in the arrest of eight suspects for allegedly selling liquor without licences and the confiscation of about R35 000 worth of liquor.
A further 36 people were arrested for alleged immigration offences, while additional arrests during pre-operation activities included eight suspects for house robbery, three for dealing in liquor without a licence and two for driving under the influence.
Joint effort targets crime
The operation involved the police, Department of Home Affairs, Department of Community Safety, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, community policing forums, patrollers and private security companies.
Acting Johannesburg District Commissioner Brigadier Egen Moodley commended the police and other participating law enforcement agencies for their continued commitment to enforcing the law, disrupting criminal activities and enhancing community safety.
