CP unveils new power station

City Power unveiled a new substation that is set to improve electricity provision and water stability to Fleurhof and surrounding areas.

City Power (CP) unveiled the new state-of-the-art Fleurhof Substation on March 20, which is set to significantly increase power generation and water stability in the Roodepoort area.

According to CP spokesperson Isaac Mangena the brand new 88/11kv prefabricated substation comprises of three 45MVA transformers and will provide 135MVA firm bulk capacity in the Fleurhof area.

“In addition to providing electricity for about 22000 units in the Fleurhof Ext 2 development, it also provides enough capacity for businesses and for future growth in the vicinity,” he says.

Mangena adds the new substation will also be powering some Rand Water systems, which should go a long way to stabilising local water supply.

The launch event was a who’s who of prominent local figures, featuring invited community members, ward councilors Caleb Finn (Ward 70) and Teke Tabane (Ward 127), management of CP and Rand Water, Johanesburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda, and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi.

The R360 million project is set to provide a big boost in stabilising electricity and water supply.

Ward 70 Councilor Caleb Fin says that this was a project long in the making. “We have worked on realising this project since 2017,” he says, adding that after the municipal demarcation in 2021, himself and Councilor Tabane worked together, fighting for budget to be allocated to the new substation.

“This is a great achievement for the city, despite the many challenges we’ve had to face to get to this point.”

According to Rand Water chairperson Matshidiso Hashatse this substation was a critical project for the entity.

“When Rand Water’s power goes off it takes time for our systems to pick up,” he says. “If the power goes out for 30 minutes, it takes about four hours for our systems to pick up again. We are proud to have partnered with CP to ensure that our communities receive uninterrupted service.”
