Sewage leak pollutes greenbelt
The greenbelt on Sterretjie Street remains polluted by a sewage leak causing the infrastructure to rupture.
A persistent sewage leak along the greenbelt of Sterretjie Street has become a growing concern for residents.
The ongoing sewage leak has caused the river flowing along the greenbelt to be polluted with green murky water, which has now caused blockage to the infrastructure, pushing the community and surrounding complexes to the brink of a health crisis.
According to Willowbrook, Ruimsig, Amorosa and Poortview (WRAP) Residents Association chairperson Martin van der Westhuizen, the affected area, known for its tranquil atmosphere, has become a hotspot for vagrancy and illicit activities, including hidden stolen cables.
“WRAP partnered with the community and regularly donated funds to let the grass be cut to avoid vagrants occupying the greenbelt. There are many complexes surrounding the greenbelt, and we try to ensure safety and avoid health hazards.
“Residents are frustrated by the lack of urgency from Johannesburg Water (JW) to address this issue. If the blockage is cleared, in a week or two the sewage leakage returns due to the infrastructure being unable to handle the excessive leakage, especially when it rains,” Van der Westhuizen said.
The pollution is not only harming the environment but also posing a risk to public health.
“If the infrastructure is not resolved, this could contaminate the water supply, putting thousands at risk. The greenbelt is close to Sterretjie Park, and we can’t let it become a dumping ground for sewage,” he added.
As the situation continues to deteriorate, WRAP is calling for action to repair the infrastructure.
The Roodepoort Northsider contacted JW for comment and was informed that a response would be received soon for a follow-up.
