Sewer nightmare for Parkland residents

A two-year crisis is plaguing Parklands residents leaving them frustrated despite numerous reports.

Residents of the Parklands and Parklands Manor complexes, as well as the neighbouring areas, have been battling a persistent crisis with their sewerage system for over two years, with no permanent solution in sight.

According to the CEO of the residents’ board of the complexes, Charles Parsons, the issue has multiple facets:

• A continuous sewage stream flowing from the sewerage system in Constantia Kloof
• Raw sewage spilling down the greenbelt
• A broken sewerage line in the park

Parsons explains that this environmental and public health hazard has been consistently reported to the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) since June. Despite assurances from CoJ officials, the problem persists.

“Every time we log in our calls and convince our residents to call them, we would have workers who come and assure us they will fix it the next day. The following day we remain with the same issue and are forced to spend weekends with closed windows because of the unbearable smell.

“Our interaction with CoJ workers led to frustration and concerns about our health, safety and environmental degradation. We have documented every interaction and site visit, yet the situation remains unchanged.

“On September 26, another report was filed, and the CoJ workers we spoke to acknowledged the leaking pipes. On November 4, we were assured that the issue was escalated and there would be contractors on site, but no action followed,” Parsons adds.

Residents are calling for accountability and urgent action from CoJ to resolve this crisis.

The Roodepoort Northsider contacted CoJ for comment as well as an estimated time for the sewage leak repairs, and no comment was received by the time of going to print.
