Water problems persist

Johannesburg Water still has no answers for Somerset and Van Der Stel Street residents' water pressure problems.

Residents of Somerset and Van Der Stel streets report that they still struggle daily with nearly non-existent water pressure, which does not seem to be an issue in surrounding streets.

The Roodepoort Record posed questions to Joburg Water spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala regarding this long-outstanding issue.

According to Shabalala, water pressure, or the lack thereof, depends on various issues including the position and layout of the water reticulation and how high or low-lying the area is.

“These two streets are at the end of a specific section of the reticulation, which could affect their water pressure.

“We have found that the normal pressure supply from the bulk supplier in the area is not as normal, however, this area is being fed off a direct connection from the bulk supplier.

“Joburg Water is following up with them to investigate this matter.”

Questioned why residents say they have had no joy from Joburg Water even though they have multiple reference numbers for calls logged to the entity, Shabalala says it must be noted, for example, that call centre agents are not able to provide direct answers as they are only responsible for assisting residents with logging calls.

“Only the operations teams conduct investigations and attend to repairs and logged calls for service delivery issues.”

Meanwhile, residents say they are still completely without water for most of the day, with weak pressure only returning to their homes after 20:00 each night.
