Sewerage leak strikes again at complex
Residents of Parklands struggle with another sewage leak a week after it was repaired.
Dilapidated sewerage systems remain a persistent issue in the Northside area, and there seem to be no solid solutions as residents continue to live in this nightmare.
Residents of the Parklands complex are once again stuck in a wormhole of a sewerage leakage that was reported on the weekend (November 30) after being repaired by Johannesburg Water (JW) on November 21.
Resident and chief executive officer of the residents’ board Charles Parsons explained that the issue has multiple facets, which are a continuous sewage stream flowing from the drainage system in Constantia Kloof, raw sewage spills down the greenbelt, and a broken sewer line in the park.
The marketing and communications officer for JW, Nolwazi Dhlamini, confirmed that the sewage water was drained by the workers, yet a week later the water was gushing out, leaving a trail of loose bottles, toilet paper, and faeces.
“The leakage started on November 30 when we noticed an unpleasant smell coming from the side of our dam in the backyard. Upon arrival, we noticed the water gushing out of the stormwater drain to our dam.
“This is not only affecting us as residents but the fish and ducks in our dam are now suffering from this contaminated water. It’s very frustrating to constantly battle with service delivery and have it come back even worse a week later after they had said it was repaired,” resident Steven Hanson said.
Hanson adds that it’s impossible to open windows during this heatwave as the smell permeates their home and makes it uncomfortable to function.
The Northsider has contacted Dhlamini for comment on the matter. JW’s response will be published in a follow-up article once received.
