Johannesburg cemeteries destroyed by heavy rains

JCPZ has assured residents of their dedication to restoring and preserving these final resting places with care and respect.

Recent torrential rains in Johannesburg have caused significant damage to cemeteries across the city, resulting in sunken graves, erosion and collapsed headstones.

Families are urged to inspect the gravesites of their loved ones and report any damages.

Jenny Moodley, spokesperson for Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ), explained, “This unfortunate situation is a global phenomenon exacerbated by increasing rainfall. Johannesburg is currently experiencing peak rainfall season, and we expect these weather patterns to persist until March. Cemeteries, particularly areas with recent burials, are more susceptible to erosion and subsidence.”

The hardest-hit cemeteries include Avalon in Soweto, Waterval in Midrand, Olifantsvlei in the south, and Westpark in Emmarentia. While families are responsible for the upkeep and repair of headstones, JCPZ is committed to assisting families in the process.

“We will only refill graves with the families’ consent,” Moodley emphasised.

Residents are encouraged to visit cemeteries, identify damages, and report issues by contacting Zolile Mpophoma, Manager of Cemeteries and Crematoria on 011 712 6600 or via email at zmpophoma@jhbcityparks.com.

The required details include the cemetery name, name of the deceased, section and grave number.

For updates and further information, residents can visit the JCPZ website or follow their social media platforms.

“Maintaining the dignity and beauty of gravesites is a shared responsibility, and we deeply value the cooperation of Johannesburg’s families during this challenging time,” concluded Moodley.
