Petition to recommission Kite Street water tower submitted
The Kite Street water tower was decommissioned in the early 2000s and residents of Horison are battling with an unstable water supply.
There’s still no clear reason as to why the Kite Street water tower was decommissioned in the early 2000s, leaving residents in Horison and adjacent areas with an inconsistent water supply.
However, a petition has been signed by residents and submitted to request the city to at least conduct a feasibility study on it. This petition will also be submitted to the Human Rights Commission in the next coming weeks.
According to Ward 85 councillor Zone Hughes, the petition saw more than 500 signatures and is still ongoing.
“We first reported and raised this issue in 2023 and we have been told a lot of stories about it.

“Residents face daily inconsistent water supply and it has become a nightmare with the constant water and power outages ”
“Last year I tabled a motion requesting the city to conduct a feasibility study on the possibility of recommissioning the tower. However, it was voted against by multiple political parties.
“During the debate, it was stated that a feasibility study had already been conducted and that a short-term solution would be to provide a generator to the Finch Street Water Tower. This comes after I first proposed this motion for generators at the Finch Street Water Tower in November 2023,” Hughes said.
The Roodepoort Record sent questions to Johannesburg Water about their plans with regards to the tower and a detailed update will be provided once received.
