Stadium hydrant leaks despite past repairs
The silence from the officials is making the situation worse as water continues to flow unchecked.
A fire hydrant at Ruimsig Stadium has been leaking for months, spilling water and forming a stagnant puddle on the ground despite repeated repair efforts by Johannesburg Water (JW).
Water continues to leak from the hose outlet of the hydrant, seeping into the ground and flowing downhill, where it collects into a small pond.
Residents say the issue has persisted for months, with contractors frequently sent out to fix it, but with no lasting success. According to resident Robert Watchorn, the community has tried closing the valves themselves in a bid to stop the waste, but to no avail.
“JW has been here multiple times, but the leak just keeps coming back,” he said. “It’s wasteful, frustrating, and no one tells us when a proper fix is coming.”
Beyond the waste of water, especially concerning in a region that faces ongoing water restrictions, residents fear the hydrant might not work properly in a fire emergency. The lack of communication has only added to their frustration.
Community members are also questioning the quality of previous repairs and the state of local infrastructure.
The Northsider asked JW whether they are aware of the issue, how many times the hydrant has been repaired, and what long-term solution is being considered.
At the time of publication, no response had been received. The situation will be monitored, and updates will be provided as soon as feedback is received.
