JW throttles outlets to manage demand

Residents can expect and prepare for changes in their water supply.

Johannesburg Water (JW) has released a water system update stating that the city’s water supply systems, including those in Roodepoort, remain constrained but are still supplying fairly to adequately across most areas.

The update was issued on October 2 at 19:30, urging residents to use water sparingly as demand continues to place pressure on reservoirs.

According to the latest status report, the Helderkruin and Fleurhof reservoirs are under strain but continue to supply fairly. The Helderkruin Tower, Florida North Tower, Witpoortjie Reservoir, Constantia Tower, and Witpoortjie Tower are systems that continue to supply water sufficiently.

To manage water levels, the Constantia Tower was scheduled for overnight closure. Robertville Reservoir, which had previously faced challenges, is also reported to be supplying fairly.

JW stated that, as part of its Water Demand Management strategy, it is throttling or closing outlets in certain areas to curb water losses and balance demand. Where households experience a total lack of water, an alternative supply will be arranged through co-ordination with ward councillors.

The utility has appealed to all customers in the Roodepoort system to reduce consumption by using water sparingly.
