RA re-erects flooded fence

This brings peace to the residents, as they can now rest assured that the natural environment is protected from illegal activities such as dumping.

The RiverWel Residents Association (RWRA) has started repair works on the palisade fencing along the river and park area on Dolfhout Street. This comes after the fence was washed away during the heavy rains that led to many areas being flooded in March 2025.

According to the RWRA chairperson, Newton Kemp, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo replaced the palisade fencing that is on the upper side on Jim Fouché Road, and this one was left like that since then. “This fence used to be here with the RA, and we decided to pay for it to get re-erected since the municipality decided to replace their fence that they had,” Newton said.

The work to replace it began on Wednesday, January 21, and is expected to finish by Friday, January 30. Newton added that there is still more work to be done, including levelling the fence and shortening the pales to avoid them being used as an entry point into the house next to it. “There are still little bit of touch ups that need to be done here and there, but by Friday, everything will be done,” he said.

The repairs form part of ongoing efforts to improve safety and protect the river and adjacent park area, which have been affected by vandalism and wear over time. Once completed, the fencing will help prevent illegal access, reduce dumping, and create a safer environment for residents and park users.

Newton has asked residents to be patient while the work is taking place as temporary noise, moving of equipment and workers in the area could be expected during working hours.

The RWRA committee thanked residents for their continued support and understanding, noting that keeping the area clean and maintaining the shared spaces is a collective responsibility.
