More than 60 illegal immigrants arrested

Roodepoort police held another successful Operation Shanela, arresting more than 60 illegal immigrants.

Roodepoort Police held another successful Operation Shanela on April 23 along the notorious Adcock Road in Tshepisong.

The operation consisted of three different arms: A major roadblock, an illegal alcohol vendor raid, and an illegal mining operation.

The operation was led by Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni and saw numerous successes achieved, including the arrest of illegal immigrants, the closing down of several illegal alcohol vendors, the destruction of illegal mining infrastructure, and the seizure of various illegal mining implements.

At the roadblock, police officers as well as members from JMPD stopped traffic from both directions, checking both vehicles and drivers.

The operation yielded excellent successes, with more than 60 illegal immigrants arrested.

An officer on scene told the Roodepoort Record that many arrests that are related to illegal mining will be logged as illegal immigrant arrests, since one has to catch a suspect in the act of illegal mining in order to log a case of illegal mining.

Regular operations held under the banner of Operation Shanela, which draws various law enforcement agencies and units from all over the district together, have produced excellent results over the past year, with thousands of arrests made for a wide range of criminal activities throughout the Johannesburg district.

Several illegal alcohol vendors were closed down and had their stock confiscated, and JMPD issued numerous traffic fines on the day.
