Crawfordians host Grandparents Day

The day was filled with animated conversation and laughter between grandchildren and grandparents.

They say that grandparents are one of the greatest gifts that you will ever know; and to show grandparents how special they are, Crawford Ruimsig Pre-school celebrated Grandparents Day.

Lwazi Jiji had so much fun showing his Gogo around campus.

So, on Friday, August 26 grandparents from near and far came together so that they could be spoilt and be reminded how special they are. Crawford welcomed all the gogos, umkhulus, grannies, grandpas, nannies, pa’s, oumas and oupas and a few aunties for a fun morning.

The classrooms and playgrounds were decorated with flowers made by each student using craft materials, with the reasons why their grandparent was so special to them written on the flowers.

The Grade 0 students drew portraits of their grandparents and hung them in the corridors. Each student made a card for their grandparents and decorated a pot plant with an ice-cream stick flower and a photo of their grandchild with the words ‘Thank you for helping me grow’.

The students planted a flower in the pot with their grandparents and remembered to water it.

They could then share a picnic in the warm sunshine. The grandparents had the opportunity to meet the other grandparents, as well as their grandchildren’s friends, and to watch them play together. One of the grandparents became a mommy in Maragon/ Crawford Ruimsig in 2008 and celebrated Grandparents Day with her grandchild on this special day. Other grandparents reconnected with friends they hadn’t seen in years.

Teachers were also on hand to tell all the grandparents what wonderful role models their grandchildren are, which made them smile from ear to ear. The grandparents were blown away by the quality of work they saw in the classrooms and were eager to see what their grandchildren were learning.

The grandparents were invited to the music room where the music teacher sang a song with the students who used puppets and musical instruments to perform the song Thula Baba for their grandparents.

Grandparents play an important role in their grandchildren’s lives, and Crawford is very grateful for the opportunity to recognise and thank grandparents. Unconditional love from grandparents makes a child feel safe and secure. The advantages are mutual; grandchildren help grandparents live happier and longer lives.

The grandparents had a wonderful morning and unanimously agreed that being a grandparent is by far the best!
