JMPD officer commended for arresting rape suspect

The 33-year-old suspect was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Acting Chief of Police Angie Mokasi has commended the remarkable work done by Metro Police Officer Desmond Ntsumela from the JMPD Region C Operations unit.

Ntsumela, who played a significant role in arresting a suspect for rape, has been appreciated for the exceptional job he did.

On Saturday, October 5, 2019 Ntsumela was on his way to report for duty when he was approached by a group of people who informed him of a woman who had been raped.

He immediately rushed to the given location in Durban Deep, Roodepoort, where he found the victim and heard her account of the ordeal.

Ntsumela apprehended the male suspect, who was still in the vicinity where he raped the victim, and he was detained at the Roodepoort Police Station.

“Something told me to act fast because the victim was violated and I had to do something about it, she deserves justice,” said Ntsumela.

Over the past three years, Ntsumela has worked closely with the investigating officer, and due to his testimony in court and his willingness to work hand-in-hand with the Honeydew Family Violence and Child Protection Unit (FCS), the 33-year-old suspect was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court.
