Residents concerned regarding Metrobus services

Residents who make use of the Metrobuses have raised concerns regarding the safety and reliability of the buses.

Numerous residents travelling with the Metrobus from Westgate have expressed concerns regarding the trouble they are experiencing with the buses.

According to Engela van Collegeville, a resident that makes use of the Metrobuses regularly, the busses are constantly overloaded with passengers, and many passengers are left at bus stops because the busses are too full to take more passengers. One of the bus drivers retired in December and his position has not been filled, thus that bus is not available anymore.

Nadia Harris, another passenger that uses the Metrobus, also stated there had been an incident where the driver had taken his own route, instead of the stipulated route, which means people are not reaching their destination.

Due to these issues, passengers are making use of e-hailing services like Uber or Bolt as they can’t be late to work or they do not want to wait for a bus after dark, as it is not safe, which takes a toll on their finances.

Further, the buses are not in the best condition, as Van Collegeville stated, “The busses are also in poor condition, they leak when it rains, the windows are either not closing or can not open. I once got on a bus where the floor was wet because the diesel was leaking into the bus.”

The Record contacted Goodwill Shiburi, Metrobus spokesperson, regarding these concerns, but by the time the article was published, no comment has been received.
