Rugby coach's Spanish adventure awaits, but she needs your help
Her selection for the overseas tour marks another milestone in a rugby journey shaped by leadership, teaching and mentorship.
Once a rugby player herself, Hanlie Swanepoel (37) is now preparing to lead the next generation of young South African players on an international tour. This is something she sees as both a privilege and a chance to grow as a coach.
Her selection to coach the Prestige Youth Sport Regional Rugby Team that will be touring Spain from November 29 to December 8 was unexpected.
“When I found out that I was selected as a coach, I was completely caught off-guard! Afterwards, reality started to sink in, and I realised that I am really going to Spain. It was an incredible moment,” she said with a big smile.

For Hanlie, this achievement is more than just being able to coach; it is validation.
“You work long and hard, and then, suddenly, you receive the confirmation that someone trusts you enough to be part of something bigger.”
Hanlie said that she has always loved sport in general.
“I have always been someone who enjoys participating and challenging myself physically. Rugby later became more than just a sport for me. I had the opportunity to play for Pirates and at a higher level; I even ran out for the Golden Lions women’s rugby team. Today, rugby is still a big part of my life, but now from the perspective of a player, coach and teacher.”
Being a teacher at Hoërskool Bastion, Hanlie believes this helps shape the way she coaches.
“In the classroom, you learn every day that not every child learns in the same way or needs the same support. It is the same on the rugby field; you have to get to know your players, understand what motivates them and know when to push harder or simply just stand beside them,” Hanlie explained.
Hanlie believes that the biggest difference between being a player and a coach is your point of focus – as a player you focus mainly on yourself and your own performance, but, as a coach, you carry the responsibility of making the people around you better.
“Now it is not just a question of how you can better yourself, but how you can help to make your players better.”
The Spain tour is not only an opportunity for Hanlie to grow, develop and improve as a coach, but also a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the young players.
“This tour is an opportunity for them to return as better rugby players and more confident young people. They will also experience a different culture, meet new people and a different rugby environment. It is something they will always remember,” she said.
She added that seeing the players’ reactions when they arrive in Spain is something she looks forward to the most, and a successful tour for her would be if every player returns with more confidence, new friendships and unforgettable memories.
“The result of a match is important, but to me, development and experience are just as important.”
Even though this is a huge achievement and dream come true for Hanlie, the costs are astronomical.
“The tour costs are R55 000, excluding Visa and other costs. I am not someone who easily asks for help, but I simply can’t do this on my own. Nobody achieves great things on their own, and sometimes you have to be willing to put your hand up and say, ‘I have a dream; help me make it a reality’.”

She has started a BackaBuddy campaign; the funds raised will help with the costs associated with the tour, including travel, accommodation and other expenses.
“The aim is to reduce the financial pressure for me to make the most of this opportunity.”
She said that every contribution will make a difference and not only help her pay for a tour, but also share an experience with other young players.
“Even a message of support goes a long way; you do not always have to contribute financially to be part of someone’s journey.”
Hanlie concluded with a special message to the players:
“Enjoy every second. You have worked hard to get here – now it is your turn to show who you are. Don’t be afraid to dream big. Wear your South African jersey with pride, play for one another and make memories that you will carry with you for the rest of your lives.”
