Crawfordians explore Great Barrier Reef in VR
Youth explore the ocean and learn about the impact of humanity on coral reefs.
The Grade Five teachers at Crawford International Ruimsig organised an innovative lesson for their learners. Equipped with virtual reality headsets, they viewed the Great Barrier Reef, as well as other coral reefs, and polluted beaches, immersing themselves in the wonders of the magnificent ecosystems but also visualising how human actions can ruin these wonders.
“As part of their unit of inquiry, the young explorers delved deep into the concept of ecosystems, with a particular focus on coral reefs. They discovered the vital role these underwater marvels play in our planet’s biodiversity and how they are affected by human actions such as pollution and climate change,” explained Tayla Polgase, Head of the innovation station at the school.
She elaborated that the learners used their ‘Six Thinking Hats’ by Edward de Bono to collaboratively answer a quiz and reflect on their learnings. Each hat represents a different perspective, guiding their thoughts and discussions. They summarised what they learnt and what hat they used during the lesson.
The session concluded with a lively group discussion where learners shared their diverse perspectives, fostering a deeper understanding of the delicate balance between nature and human impact.
