Residents face aftermath of intense rainfall and widespread damage

Residents are urged to exercise caution, especially in low-lying areas, and to report any blocked drains, damaged infrastructure or hazardous conditions.

Johannesburg experienced intense rainfall yesterday evening, leading to widespread flooding in several areas. The heavy downpours caused severe damage, with manholes being lifted, low-lying bridges submerged, and greenbelts being washed away.

Residents in affected suburbs woke up this morning to scenes of destruction, with some reporting collapsed boundary walls and flooded properties. Many are now left to deal with the aftermath as they assess the extent of the damage.

In response to the crisis, members of Community Policing Forums (CPF) and Residents’ Associations (RAs) have stepped in to assist where possible. Volunteers have been seen working together to clear debris, assess safety hazards, and support those impacted by the floods.

According to the South African Weather Service, Johannesburg is expected to experience partly cloudy conditions with isolated showers and thundershowers today. However, no severe thunderstorm warnings have been issued at this time. Residents are still advised to remain cautious, as further rain could slow recovery efforts in flood-affected areas.
