Claw receives winter supplies from student donation drive

Overall, the donation is a positive step towards supporting animal welfare in the community.

Students from the IIE MSA have recently donated 35 blankets and dog food to Community Led Animal Welfare (Claw), a non-profit animal shelter in Durban Deep. The donation was part of an annual outreach project organised by IIE MSA Cares, the institution’s student volunteer body.

After the handover, student volunteers assisted at the shelter by walking the dogs and cleaning the facility. This hands-on involvement not only helped the animals but also gave the students a chance to understand the importance of their contribution. Claw provides veterinary care and shelter services to animals in need, with a focus on low-income communities. The organisation also educates community members about responsible pet ownership, including proper shelter, basic healthcare, vaccinations, tick control, and adequate feeding.

According to Michelle Weedman, manager at Claw, the donation will help keep the dogs warm during the winter months.

“On average, we admit 100 dogs per month for treatment of various medical conditions. At any given time, we have around 30 to 40 dogs waiting to be adopted. This donation will make a difference in their lives,” she said.

The shelter’s work is crucial in providing care and support to animals in need, and the donation will help support their ongoing efforts.

The IIE MSA Cares volunteer body organises many outreach projects throughout the year, including initiatives related to education, health, and animal welfare. The students’ participation in community-focused initiatives provides them with valuable experiences and skills. By donating to Claw, the students are contributing to the welfare of animals in their community and demonstrating the importance of giving back.

Claw relies on donations and support from the community to continue providing essential services to animals in need, and the donation of blankets and dog food will help support Claw’s ongoing work, including providing care and shelter to animals in need.

The organisation’s efforts to educate community members about responsible pet ownership will also benefit from the students’ initiative.
