Uncertain future for Toolbox after funding denied

The Toolbox Empowerment Hub is one of the few charitable initiatives that gets people off the street and into sustainable jobs.

The Toolbox Empowerment Hub has, in the nearly two years since its formation, made an incalculable difference both to the communities it serves and in the lives of its beneficiaries.

According to the hub’s manager, Andrew Holdsworth, Toolbox is one of the few charitable organisations in existence today that boasts measurable outcomes, having helped uplift more than 800 people out of homelessness and unemployment in 2024/25 alone.

But, due to the refusal of the Department of Social Development to renew their funding, the good work of the Toolbox Empowerment Hub is now in jeopardy.

The Department of Social Development cites a lack of funds for the denial of funding, despite having had to return R102m to the National Treasury due to underspending in the 2024/ 25 financial year.

“Their reasoning simply doesn’t make sense,” says Holdsworth. “We have a proven methodology and track record. What we do works.

“Why would they choose to fund charities that give handouts over an organisation that empowers people to get their lives back and become productive members of society is beyond me.

“Our success in empowering homeless and destitute men through practical skills development and access to sustainable employment is well-documented.

“We lament the department’s short-sightedness in turning away from a life-saving initiative that directly contributes to social and economic upliftment. The consequence is not only a disruption of services but a missed opportunity to empower those most in need,” he adds.

“Toolbox remains committed to the men we serve. We call on our business and community partners to stand with us as we pursue alternative means of sustaining this critical work,” he concludes.

The Roodepoort Record has sent questions to the department regarding this matter, and, as soon as a response is received, a follow-up article will be published.
