New president take reigns at Wilro Lions

Club looks forward to another year of service, fellowship and community impact.

Sandy van Heerden, a dedicated member of the Wilro Lions Club for 38 years, was elected and inducted as the club’s president for the 2025/ 26 serving year.

The induction ceremony, held on July 12 at Sunny Rock Estate, was attended by fellow club members who gathered to celebrate her new role.

Sandy joined the Wilro Lions in 1987, shortly after women were allowed to join the organisation. Since then, she has been driven to serve, empower, and create positive change in her local community.

“I’ve had the privilege of serving as president five times now, and it’s always an honour to lead and serve,” Sandy said during her address.

“I’m grateful for the trust my fellow members have placed in me, and I’m excited to lead our club into a new year of service, fundraising, and fellowship.”

As the club embarks on this new chapter, Sandy expressed her appreciation for the dedication and hard work of its members.

“Your tireless efforts have made a significant difference in the lives of many,” she said. “As we approach our 40th anniversary in April 2026, I invite all members, especially our founding members, to join me in planning a celebration that will mark this important milestone.”

The president’s role in Lions involves setting goals, chairing meetings, and guiding the club’s efforts, which are centred around five pillars of service: vision, hunger alleviation, environmental care, childhood cancer awareness, and diabetes awareness.

“We identify needs within our community and respond with support,” she explained. “We’re also eager to welcome young members who share our passion for serving others and making a difference.”

The ceremony was not only about introducing the new president, but also to show appreciation for various members’ service to the community. A new member, Michelle Maraz, was also welcomed and inducted.
