Residents learn through civic-minded education
At the recent Civic Education session in Zandspruit, residents explored practical ways to exercise their rights and take part in local decision-making.
Region C in Johannesburg has launched a new session of Civic Education aimed at creating more informed and involved citizens by equipping participants with the knowledge and skills needed to help shape the future of their city.
On August 13, the City of Johannesburg hosted a Civic Education event at the Emthonjeni Community Centre in Zandspruit, Ward 114. The programme is designed to promote empowerment and community involvement across the city.

“Civic Education is the cornerstone of a healthy democracy. Through these programmes, we are empowering our residents – especially the youth – to understand their rights, responsibilities, and the workings of government. As the Office of the Speaker, we are committed to fostering an engaged, informed, and active citizenry. Civic education is one of the most powerful ways to strengthen our democracy from the ground up,” said Speaker of Council, Margaret Arnolds.
Residents received information on civic duties, rights, and opportunities to contribute to their community’s development.
“When communities are informed, they are empowered. This programme is not just about teaching; it’s about giving residents the tools they need to participate meaningfully in the governance of our city,” Arnolds added.
The session marked an important step in equipping locals to engage with government and promote positive change in their neighbourhoods.
