From cybersecurity to content creation
Keith Dodgen shares his journey as a content creator.
Imagine quitting a stable career in cybersecurity to become a full-time content creator.
That’s exactly what Keith Dodgen (28), also known as yungearn on social media, did. With a background in music and IT, Keith found his true calling in creating entertaining and daring content.
“I started as a rapper because I’ve always known that I’m a creative. However, life took me to IT, and I had to leave because I felt like there was no freedom and no space for creativity,” he said.
Keith started creating content seven years ago, driven by a desire to express his goofy and funny side. He says he has found stability, comfort and is definitely making more money than he did in IT.

Currently he has more 50 000 subscribers on YouTube, over seven million likes on TikTok and over 70 000 followers on Instagram.
His content is a fusion of humour, satire, and social commentary, often pushing boundaries and challenging himself. From tasting exotic foods like Mqombothi (sorghum beer) and Chinese century eggs to exploring the townships and most dangerous areas like Johannesburg CBD, his adventures are both daring and enlightening.
“I have visited areas like Kagiso, Orange Farm and Soweto. The communities have been very welcoming. I use my platform to raise awareness on social issues in a humorous and satirical way. I want to bring unity, oneness and show that we can all live together.
“My content is also user-pushed. Usually, subscribers and followers direct me towards the challenges they want me to try,” he said, adding that his content stands out because he does what other creators aren’t willing to do.
In a recent video, Keith took his challenge to the streets, posing as a beggar for 24 hours to raise awareness about homelessness. He made over R300 in an hour and donated the money back to those in need.

“It was about helping people and giving back to the community. I also wanted to explore what forms of begging make more money,” he said.
As a content creator, Keith’s days can be unpredictable. “Some days feel like I’m completely unemployed, while others I’m extremely busy,” he said.
He handles all aspects of his content, shooting and editing videos himself with self-imposed deadlines.
His advice to other aspiring creators is to pursue their passion and study the work of others, incorporating those learnings into their own unique style. By doing so, they can carve out their own niche and succeed in the competitive world of content creation. Passion, hard work, and adaptability are key to thriving in this dynamic field, he emphasises.
