2 JMPD trainee candidates die during recruitment process
Sadness hangs in the stadium where determination has turned into devastation.
Two Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) trainee candidates have died during the department’s ongoing recruitment and selection process at Ruimsig Stadium.
JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla confirmed the incidents to the Roodepoort Northsider.
According to Fihla, Marvellous Michael Nyambi (24), from Rabie Ridge, collapsed from heat exhaustion on Thursday, August 28, while taking part in the physical assessments. He was attended to by City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (CoJEMS) personnel and later taken to Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital for further treatment. Nyambi passed away the following day, Friday, August 29.

In a separate incident, Zwelethu Tekete (26), from Braamfischerville Phase One, was brought into the stadium unresponsive on Monday, September 1. CoJEMS personnel immediately initiated CPR, but despite their efforts, he was declared dead at the scene.

The physical assessments at the stadium include:
• A 5km run: 35 minutes for men, 40 minutes for women
• Push-ups: 30 in one minute for men, 25 in one minute for women
• Sit-ups: 35 in one minute for men, 30 in one minute for women
• A 1.8m wall jump, with two attempts allowed
“The JMPD extends its heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of Nyambi and Tekete during this difficult time. The well-being and safety of all candidates and officers remain our top priority,” Fihla said.
